Childcare commitments drive flexibility need for half of working parents

Childcare is the key reason half (47 per cent) of parents in employment are working flexibly, according to a new survey.

The Bright Horizons’ Modern Families Index 2023 found that childcare was the top driver for flexibility, whereas only a third (29 per cent) of working parents said they did so to manage their own wellbeing.

HR consultant and coach Gemma Bullivant said that regardless of the moral or reputational drive to support greater diversity in the organisation, “the commercial case is increasingly clear” that companies with a stronger gender balance outperform those where women are underrepresented. “An integrated approach to family-friendly policies, with education, awareness and support for all aspects of childcare, will attract and retain women through the critical mid-management phase of their careers, and this is a critical component to ensuring there are enough senior female executives to lead the business in the future,” she said.
