The Three Key Elements of Strategic Thinking

Understanding Strategic Thinking

In today’s fast-paced world, finding yourself juggling multiple priorities is not just common—it’s practically inevitable. With demands coming from all directions, from work to family to personal pursuits, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to focus your efforts. You might find yourself constantly firefighting, dealing with whatever task or crisis demands your attention at the moment, without a clear sense of direction or purpose.

But here’s the thing: constantly reacting to whatever comes your way is not a sustainable strategy for success. It’s like trying to navigate a ship without a compass—you might make some progress, but you’ll likely end up going in circles or getting lost at sea.

That’s where strategic thinking comes in. Instead of just reacting to the immediate demands of the moment, strategic thinking empowers you to take a step back, assess the bigger picture, and make deliberate choices about where to focus your time, energy, and resources. It’s about setting clear goals, prioritising tasks based on their importance and impact, and aligning your actions with your long-term objectives.

 

How can you think strategically? 

1. Future Focus

Don’t just wait for challenges to hit; anticipate them, prepare for them, and even see them as opportunities in disguise.

2. Breadth

Strategic thinking extends beyond the immediate tasks. Consider the broader implications of decisions and understand the interconnectedness of various factors. Embrace a panoramic view to make informed choices that drive sustainable growth.

3. Purpose

Every action in strategic thinking is guided by purpose. It’s all about aligning decisions with your overarching goals and mission. Define your purpose, and make sure all your actions support your purpose. 

 

The “What, So What, Now What” Framework:

A powerful tool in strategic thinking is the reflective “What, So What, Now What” framework. It’s a simple yet useful way of thinking that enables you to cover all the aspects of the task ahead, prompting critical questions to enhance your decision-making. Let’s break it down together:

What?

Name the challenge

This may seem a little obvious, but it’s surprising how often people skip identifying the challenge or goal. Whether you’ve been tasked with reducing recruitment costs or asked to create a new strategy for expanding into new markets, taking the time to define the challenge clearly is crucial. It’s like laying the groundwork for a successful project – without a solid foundation, the entire endeavour is at risk of collapsing.

 It can be so easy to skip this step and go straight to fix mode. Rushing straight into action without considering the challenge itself can lead to a narrow-minded approach. We become focused on quick fixes rather than exploring the full breadth of perspectives and possibilities. This tunnel vision limits our ability to develop innovative solutions and may result in missed opportunities for improvement.

 

So What?

Make sense of the challenge

Once the exact challenge has been pinpointed, you now move on to the ‘So What?’ stage. This stage is about elevating your thinking from the tactical to the strategic. It’s about moving beyond the surface-level details and considering the bigger picture, ensuring that your decisions are not just effective in the short term but also aligned with our long-term objectives.

In addition to considering ‘why’ the challenge or goal is important, this is also where we begin to think about other implications, such as what needs prioritising, what potential challenges we may face, what this task will achieve, and who this decision will affect. 

By taking the time to think critically about these deep questions, we elevate the quality of our thinking. We move beyond knee-jerk reactions and quick fixes, adopting a more strategic mindset that considers the full breadth of perspective.  

Now What?

Formulate actionable steps

The “Now What?” stage is where the rubber meets the road, so to speak. After identifying the challenge and thoroughly examining its implications in the “So What?” stage, you need to move on to determining the actionable steps you need to take to address the challenge effectively.

In this stage, you transition from strategic planning to tactical execution. It’s about translating our insights into concrete actions that will drive us towards our desired outcomes. This involves developing a detailed plan of action, allocating resources, and defining responsibilities.

For example, if the goal is to expand into new markets, the “Now What?” stage might entail conducting market research to identify potential opportunities, developing a marketing strategy tailored to the target audience, and allocating resources to support market entry initiatives.

Ultimately, this stage is about taking decisive action to address the challenge or pursue the goal identified in earlier stages. It’s about rolling up our sleeves and getting to work, confident in the knowledge that our actions are guided by strategic thinking and aligned with our long-term objectives.
